V2H vs Home Battery Backup: Do You Need Both?

The appeal is obvious. The car already has a battery. If it can power essential loads during an outage or support the home during peak-rate hours, that stored energy becomes more valuable.
Where a stationary home battery is stronger
A dedicated home battery is always connected to the house. That sounds boring, but it is a major advantage during outages. The car may be at work, parked with a low state of charge, or needed for an emergency trip.
Home batteries can also be tuned around household energy habits. They may charge from solar during the day, discharge in the evening, and keep a backup reserve. They are built into the electrical design of the home instead of depending on whether the vehicle is plugged in.
That makes stationary storage better for predictable daily energy management. It is also easier to treat as part of the solar system, especially when the goal is increasing self-consumption or managing time-of-use rates.
Where V2H can add real value
V2H becomes interesting when the home already has an EV that supports bidirectional power and a charger designed for it. It can provide extra backup capacity beyond the stationary battery. It may also help during longer outages if the car has enough charge and does not need to leave.
The keyword is "extra." A vehicle can be a powerful backup asset, but relying on it as the only backup source can create awkward trade-offs. Should the car power the refrigerator, or should it stay charged for evacuation? Should it discharge tonight, or will the driver need a full battery tomorrow morning?
These are not reasons to avoid V2H. There are reasons to design it carefully.
